On Saturday, the Pittsburgh Steelers kick off their preseason schedule when they go on the road to take on the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Steelers have rebuilt their roster and could have 10 new starters when the regular season starts, which makes these preseason games even more important. Here are four things we will be watching for in this week’s game.
Clean football
One of the things that’s undone the Steelers in recent years has been unforced errors. Penalties and turnovers are the bane of Mike Tomlin’s existence and if the Steelers do nothing else, playing clean football in the first real action will do a long way toward getting off to a strong start.
High energy
There are plenty of guys on the roster battling for their spot on the depth chart and making the final 53-man roster. We hope this translates to some high-energy play against the Jaguars.
The tight ends in the passing game
The Steelers added Jonnu Smith via trade to pair up with Pat Freiermuth. We will be looking to see if Pittsburgh shows how they plan to utilize multiple tight ends as more than just blockers.
Rookies on full display
The Steelers’ rookie class has looked good in training camp, and we will be keeping a close eye on how much they are used versus the Jaguars. We especially want to see how running back Kaleb Johnson works early in the game against the Jaguars’ defense.
